Well,
Dakoda is a very special guy. He really doesn't know that he is
a cat. Many tell me, and I do believe them, that he thinks he owns
the house and I just stay there. He pretty much has run of the
house, and he'll let you know if he doesn't like something. Dakoda is
so very spoiled. He is a eighteen pound cat who loves to go for car rides in
the mornings to McDonalds. If he doesn't get to go we all pay for it.
He eats four cans of cat food a day, but he only gets fancy feast, and
thats all he will eat.
He doesn't like to be bothered by anyone. He won't bite or hurt
anyone, he will just run when your not looking. My nieces and nephews
come over and he hides. But if he isn't fast enough, he just sits
there until he can jump away. Now if he wants attention you are
expected to give it to him then. But he usually rolls on his belly,
just out of arms reach, to make you go to him. If you show him
attention first, then he just ignores you the rest of the day.
He also rules the bed. I have a king waterbed and he uses almost all
of it. No matter what time I go to bed he is usually in my spot, so
I sleep on other side, but by morning, he has moved. I have to get
up throughout the night, just to move to other side of the bed. If
for anyone stays with me, he doesn't allow them to sleep next to me or
him. He feels he must be between us, and basically, pushes the other
person out of the bed. He likes to also sleep on your back, and I'll
tell you he can get heavy. I also have two body pillows, and don't get
to use either, he does.
I watched a friend's baby, and Dakoda watched him like a hawk.
He even slept right next to him and if he woke up, Dakoda came and
got me. And if I tried to lay down for a nap with the baby, he let
me know he didn't like that at all. He just would stare at me, and
huff, loud, and a lot.
He did have a pretty hard life at times. He was very sick when
I first got him, and the vet didn't think he would live long - he was very
underweight, and infested with fleas. He had so many fleas that
they had to dip him four times to kill them all. I then had to brush
them out of his coat for more than two weeks. He is now deathly
allergic to fleas. I must get my house sprayed and kept clean
regularly, and no other animals are allowed in my home, just in case.
I'm just happy he has lived so long, I don't know what I would do without him.
My family think I'm strange. In the summer, my air conditioner stays
on 24 hours a day for Dakoda, even when I leave on trips, or to work. I
also have a baby sitter for him when I'm gone for overnight trips, or
vacations. He also has so many toys. In my small one-bedroom house, he
has two window beds, three run through tunnels, toy box full of toys, a cat
hammock, a bed, and a kitty condo. He is very spoiled and he knows it.
For Christmas and his birthday, he does receive presents from both me,
and family members. This year a friend of mine, who has a five- and nine-
year-old, wanted to make him a cake and have a party, and we did. He
loved it, and ate some of the cake.
Dakoda does have a problem with change. He gets stressed out and
gets pimples on his chin, neck and chest. So I have to be very
careful with anything that might be different. Dakoda is a
wonderful cat and I love him dearly. Life wouldn't be the same
without him!
