His
name was Caesar and he was a beautiful orange tabby with green
eyes. Caesar was rescued from a golf course where he was found
starving and dehydrated. We nursed him back to health with food, water
and some old fashioned love and tenderness. He became an integral part
of our family for the next eleven years. During his 10th year Caesar
became very vocal and began to have a frequency of urination along
with an unsatiable thirst. I became concerned and took him to the Vet.
The diagnosis was diabetes. My options were to have him put down, give
him away or figure out some way to help him with treatments and
medication. There was no choice in my mind! With the help of my
veterinarian I began a simple program with him where I tested his
blood using a human glucometer twice a day (pricking his front paw) and
then gave him insulin injections in the back of the neck to maintain
his blood sugar levels. The vet would advise me of acceptable numbers
and I would increase and decrease the dose accordingly. I increased
his food intake with low-fat, high fiber foods and made sure an ample
supple of water was available at all times. I would like everyone to
know that this disease is treatable, although not yet curable and this
was a very easy way to help a friend maintain his dignity. Using this
treatment plan gave us an extra year together for cuddles, naps and
purrrfect kisses. In loving memory - Caesar
