My
dear old friend and confidante Mademoiselle Kitty is a very special
friend. She came into my life when I bought my house in 1991 and found
that she was already living there. She agreed to take me on as her
human--on probation. She had suffered some abuse in kittenhood, so I
understood her initial wariness about sharing her living space with a
new human. I watched her evolve from a somewhat tentative, shy cat to
a very warm and affectionate companion. Although not a pure breed,
Kitty embodies the fine qualities of her Siamese and American
shorthair forebears: the slim, agile build and pretty blue eyes of her
Siamese ancestry, and the bicolor markings and sweet temperament of
her American black and white background. I named her Kitty because at
six and a half pounds she still looks like a kitten (despite her
senior status). Kitty is very respectful of "the inside" and has never
destroyed any furniture. It's as though she has an innate sense of
which toys are hers. Her intelligence is impressive: she only talks
when she needs to, or to say hello, and we have an almost telepathic
communication. But it is Kitty's sweet disposition, and the
companionship she continues to provide for me, that make her the best
cat ever. If anyone is uncertain adopting an adult cat, Kitty's story
should convince you that it is definitely a great thing to do.
