One
summer, about seven years ago, I cat-sat a very rambunctious
kitten, who had been named Bagel Linoleum Sassafrass Potato by her
rather eccentric owner at the time. In those days, one of Bagel's
favorite things to do was to hide behind furniture and very
unexpectedly jump out at guests, bite their ankles, seemingly smile
crazily, and run away. Fortunately, this was a short-lived game that
eventually just stopped. And lucky for me, when her owner returned to
Halifax at the end of that summer, she just couldn't take Bagel back
once she saw how happy and settled she was. I was glad. Bagel is
still a cat with some rather odd habits. For example, when I blow-dry
my hair every morning, she is right there waiting for and expecting to
be brushed and blow-dried too. As well, when she eats, she often will
pick up a bit of her food with her paw, fling it in the air, and after
it lands on the kitchen floor, eat it. One day, I expect her to catch
the bit in mid air! She also has quite a remarkable ability to open up
most cupboards, doors, closets, and drawers. Bagel is about as trained
as a cat can be (ha), and actually comes when she is called, no matter
what room I'm in (of course if it's the kitchen, she is especially
quick). She also will jump up on the bed or sofa when I snap my
fingers twice and say, "Come up." Overall, Bagel is a very
social cat with a wonderful personality and lots of character, but
once in awhile, she does get a bit feisty. As one of my friends who
looks after her when I'm away says, "Bagel is sweet but
saucy!"
