Emmett
is a miracle cat. One very early morning in November of 1998 we
found him by the side of the road after he had been hit by a car. We
rushed him to the closest vet who said that things didn't look good?
the lower half of his body was paralyzed and his hip was dislocated.
We left our name and phone number to be contacted in case he was not
claimed (he was not wearing a collar). After a few days, the vet
called and said that he was not getting much better. No one had
claimed him and they were probably going to have to put him to sleep.
Our hearts were torn because of our love of animals (we have two other
cats, Duncan and Annie) and our emotions for this six-month-old
kitten. They gave him two more days before we had to make a decision...
either they were going to put him to sleep, or we were going to
take home a paralyzed cat. Miraculously, the next day he got up and
walked to his food bowl. We were ecstatic and went to pick him up. All
of the employees at the vet were extremely emotional to see him leave,
one even had tears in her eyes. It wasn't just Emmett's miraculous
recovery, they said that he was one of the sweetest cats they had ever
met.
In the two years that we have had Emmett (we affectionately call him
"Little Guy" even though he is a huge cat!), he has made us joyful and
proved to be not only sweet, but also loving and affectionate with a
great sense of humor and love of play! He loves fooling around with
our other cats, although Annie likes to give him a hard time. (She
doesn't like to give other cats the time of day, which makes us wonder
if maybe she doesn't realize that she is one herself!) He often can be
seen carrying some toy or another in his mouth. Emmett loves keeping
us company and getting involved in whatever we are doing (laundry,
cooking, working on the computer, watching TV). When we come home from
work at night he follows us around squeaking (he still has that "baby
meow") until he is picked up. When you bend down to pick him up, he
meets you halfway by getting on his hindquarters and raising his arms
to hug you. His purr is about the loudest one I have heard. Emmett is
shy and doesn't often make appearances when people he doesn't know are
visiting (our parents don't believe that we have a cat named Emmett).
We understand this aspect of his personality considering all that he
has been through and don't pressure him to be social. He is more than
extroverted when the people he knows and trusts are with him. I don't
know if animals that have been through what Emmett has know it, and
consequently overcompensate for it with their thankfulness, but Emmett
couldn't make us happier with his adorable personality and his
generous gifts of affection.
