Kittredge's
baby portrait (left), snapped when he was barely bigger
than the palm of my hand, demonstrates what's special about him:
attitude! Kittredge is a small cat with a big personality, named for a
brilliant but notoriously fierce English professor at Harvard. When I
went to the pound for a kitten, I selected three of the many who
pushed against the cage to capture my attention. I looked over and
played with each one, and they were fine - but as I was trying to
decide, I was distracted by an insistent meow that had been drowned
out before. A grey kitten too tiny to fight his way to the front was
carrying on as though his heart would break. I took him out and picked
him up, and he burst into an Evinrude purr that shook me to the heart.
He was the one. I took him home, announced to my husband, "Have I
got a cat for you," and placed him on my husband's desk. He's
been the center of the household ever since, ruling with a firm but
benevolent paw. Despite his every attempt to project a regal and
dignified demeanor, he's an unwitting clown - loves Louis Rich turkey
slices and Mentholatum, romps like a cat gladiator with his much
junior associate, Jeoffrey.
