This
is my beloved Mason. He came into my life when he was seven
months old. I had been thinking of getting another cat for my Maggie
because she looked so forlornly out the window when I left the house
and came home. Without any full intentions of acquiring another cat, I
decided to volunteer at a local animal shelter. Within the first week,
I adopted him. He and Maggie were the best of friends from day
one. Mason was the light of my life for seven years. I never thought I
wanted a male cat, but Mason was so beautiful, I could not pass him
up. I have since learned male cats are quite a bit more affectionate
than female cats in many cases.
Mason is an extraordinary cat. He loved to play fetch and he loved to
cuddle with his mom. We covered a lot of ground together, Mason,
Maggie, and me. Mason moved with me and Maggie to Vancouver, BC when I
went to graduate school (most of the time he was buried underneath
suitcases in the car because he was so afraid of people looking at
him!) and moved back to Arlington with us in 1996. I drove back from
Vancouver, so Mason and Maggie flew home with Grandma. They had quite
an adventure. I had only paid for one cat ticket and the girl at the
airline ticket counter asked my mom what kind of cat she had. Mom told
her he was a Siamese mix and the girl became very excited and wanted
to see the cat because that was the kind of cat she had had at one
time. She peeked in the carrier, only to see Maggie ( a green-eyed
brown tabby) peeking back out! She very curiously said, "My cat didn't
look like that." Mom was just relieved there weren't two heads peeking
out of the carrier! Grandma got the cats on the flight safely, only
for the plane to be grounded in Oklahoma due to bad weather... for
six hours! Fortunately, for the cats and everyone on board, they had
been tranquilized. However, mom became very worried because the plane
got so hot. The pilot let her take Maggie and Mason out of the carrier
and they were both passed around the airplane and held by various
passengers. They both would have died if they knew how many strangers
arms they were in that day!
Because Mason was an indoor cat, he did not wear a collar. One April
weekend three years ago, I took he, Maggie, and our new kitty
Madelaine down to the end of my street to take their pictures in the
bluebonnets. I had the cats on leashes, but removed them to take their
pictures. Mason heard a car go by and became startled. He bolted
through the bluebonnets back towards my house. He had gotten out
before and usually calmed down after a few hours. This time was
different. I never saw my Mason again. I posted reward posters, I
scoured the neighborhood every night for months, and went to the
animal shelter on a daily basis. He simply vanished and it has broken
my heart. I can only hope he wandered into a caring stranger's home
and now has new owners who love him as much as Maggie and I do. There
are other cats in my home now and I love them so much. They all wear
collars now in the event they are ever lost. However, none of them can
hold a torch to my beloved Mason who should have had so many more
years with Maggie and me.
