I
got Harry almost two years ago from a no-kill shelter in Wellesley,
Massachusetts, called
Stray Pets in Need.
Harry was found by a realtor in the
apartment of an elderly person who'd had to move into a nursing home.
I could only have one cat in my apartment and he was the only one they
would let be adopted alone, since he didn't seem to love the company
of other cats, though he tolerates it.
Turned out I was very lucky. Harry is a sweet, (mostly) well-behaved
cat, and, as you can see, he's very handsome. For the first few hours
we had him, he hid under the bed. He was afraid us and afraid of the
cat toys we wiggled at him. Then, after four hours, he suddenly jumped
on the bed, bold as you please, demanding to be petted. Now he's
still usually a bit afraid of strangers at first, and he won't
tolerate having his back legs or his stomach touched. But he loves
getting and giving affection. He'll come in the room to hang out when
we watch TV or when friends come over. (You'd swear he's watching the
show intently.) When he's really relaxed and happy, he'll even lie on
his back with his tummy exposed. If you pet him he'll likely take hold
of your hand between his paws and start licking it. (Sometimes this
goes on a little longer than you'd like!) If you walk by without
petting him when he wants attention, you may hear a loud meow and feel
a paw swatting you. He now has a buddy, a friendly, goofy orange cat
named Aidan. After initial reluctance on Harry's part, they've become
good friends. They spend about equal amounts of time fighting and
cleaning each other's heads. If you come upon them doing this, they'll
often look up indignantly as if you're invading their privacy.
