I
had been searching for a new kitten for months after the death of my
sixteen-year-old red tabby, but I couldn't seem to find the cat for me.
Then, on my parents 35th anniversary, my mother called to tell me that
they saw two tabbies, a red and a cream, at PetSmart. I went over
that night and immediately fell in love with both of them. Since I
couldn't possibly separate this brother-sister duo, I decided to adopt
them both. An organization called CPR for Cats found them in a window
bay. Their mother had been killed by a car when they were only four weeks
old, and their two siblings also died suddenly shortly after their
rescue.
I brought Keegan and Kira home, and saw that Keegan, the
male, was congested and had watery eyes. The following day, I took
them both to the vet where I was given antibiotics and eye drops for
what was then thought to be an upper respiratory infection. Over the
next two days, Keegan's condition worsened, as he refused to eat or
drink, and became weaker by the hour. I took him back to the vet, and
that evening, they called with horrible news. Keegan had been
diagnosed with Acute Feline Distemper, a disease with a 75% fatality
rate in kittens of his age. The Doctor asked me how aggressive I
wished to be in fighting this illness, as he might not make it through
the night. Still holding out hope, I told the Doctor to do whatever
they needed to try to save him. He was given a blood transfusion by a
donor cat who had the antibodies to fight this virus, injected
antibiotics, and IV fluids. The next day, the vet called to tell me he
could come home, but was in no way out of the woods. For the next two
days, I force fed him every two hours and continued religiously with
his medications.
On the third morning, I awoke to find him eating on
his own! He has progressed well since his transfusion, to the
amazement of everyone involved. He can now wrestle and play with
Kira, with energy to spare. With the help of some wonderful doctors,
allot of TLC, and his sister taking very good care of him, Keegan
should grow up to live a long, healthy life. That is why he is such a
special little kitten!
