Rhamu
is a very special cat. In October 1997 he was given a shot of
cortisone for a persistent cough. It did nothing for the cough but
three weeks later he was diagnosed insulin dependent diabetes. I
borrowed the Vet's books and did a crash course in managing diabetes
and by February 1998 Rhamu was free of the disease. In July 1999 he
was diagnosed with Chronic Renal Failure and three weeks later the
diabetes returned. In September he was on IV fluids and the Vet did
not think he would last the night. I brought him home (there was
no-one at the clinic from 6 pm Saturday until 10 am Sunday) and between
us we gave him oral fluids 50-100ml every hour all night. The next
morning he was eating again and he has never looked back. He is a very
laid back cat; he does not mind insulin injections, sub-cutaneous
fluids, teeth cleaning, pill popping or even the occasional enema! He
is the light of our life. He is pictured laying on the warm concrete,
watching the birds, remembering (like and old man on the beach) of the
way he used to chase them in his youth!
