I
already had Maxwell, my Persian, and I knew he needed someone to keep
him occupied during my long hours at work. A new kitten was just the
ticket, so I, with the help of my wonderful, sweet and charming
godchild, Abby, went to the Forsyth County Animal Shelter to find us a
kitten. Bixby kept trying to get our attention, in spite of the fact
that we felt all the other kittens should be looked over and evaluated
for their petability factors. Finally I got him out of the cage and I
knew he was going home with me, he was so cuddly and not fearful or
jittery. The folks at the shelter said he was the most laid back cat
they had ever seen, so that sealed the deal. Bixby was going to live
with me.
Abby and I then took him on a side trip to her house, where he
successfully entertained the highly energetic affections of Abby and her
three brothers, and never so much as nipped or ran away from anyone. I
knew if he could handle the high jinks at Abby's home, he could handle
anything Maxwell would do. At first I was very concerned - the level of
enmity was such that I was not secure about leaving them alone when I
went to work. To this day, I wouldn't say they exactly love each other,
but our home is peaceful most of the time. Bixby captured my heart at
the shelter and has won me over, over and over again.
For a stray, malnourished cat, he sure had good manners. He has always
used his litter box very neatly, and happily eats Iams kitten food. But
here is what I love about him: he cuddles with me every night, purring
me to sleep and awakening me to any suspicious noises. He maintains a
vigilant watch over our home and makes sure no stray geese from our pond
come close. Mostly, though, it's among my simplest pleasures to just
watch his graceful moves as he jumps around from counter to floor and
back, his thoughtful expression as he watches the world go by in our
sunroom, and the reassuring sound of him purring can make my greatest
anxieties melt away.
Oh, he wanted me to say that his vet noted in his chart that he is quite
handsome and has excellent comportment. And his fur is among the softest
of any I have petted - softer even than a bunny rabbit's. Maxwell, his
Persian overlord, notes that he's not so bad after all. Bixby gives so
much more than he receives, and in some ways, he is my best friend.
