This
is the older of my siamese cats, Bliki (full name Natthaga
Bliki). He turned three years old in May 2002. Bliki has not been very
lucky with his health. He has been diagnosed with an untreatable
chronic inflammation of the bowels, and has more or less had constant
diarrhea since the breeder brought him to me on December 1, 1999.
Furthermore, after having been treated for what seemed a mild eye
infection shortly before his second birthday, a severe reaction to the
eye drops resulted in the eyes becoming abnormally large, with fixed
and fully dilated pupils. The vet attributed this to a rare side
effect of the eye drops due to the steroidal ingredient in the drops
(normally this would only show up after a prolonged use). Despite the
vet's effort to counteract against this, the damage had already been
done, and he's been blind ever since (he may possibly see the
difference between a bright light and darkness).
Despite his health problems, he copes unbelievably well. The other
cats (five of them) treat him as they would any other cat, sometimes
teasing him and trying to pick fights with him as cats do. He does get
startled rather easily and has a nervous disposition to start with,
but takes all things in stride. His sense of smell has increased to
compensate for the blindness, and he can be a real pest whenever he
smells something which he would like to eat (I don't feed my cats
human food, except for dried fish (which is a delicacy food in
Iceland)). No food can be left safely unattended for more than a
minute or two, since he seems to have a sixth sense about these
things.
He is still interested in playing, except that now his playthings have
to have a slight noise or smell factor. Before his blindness, he loved
to fetch anything that was tossed away, and sometimes he still brings
me a play thing and waits for me to throw it away so he can fetch it.
Unfortunately, the plaything he brought does not always make enough
sound when tossed away, so even though it has been thrown away, he
doesn't know it and just sits there looking expectantly at me, and
complains loudly when nothing happens. Bliki was my first experience
with Siamese cats. I have always thought that they were beautiful, but
was expecting a much noisier cat. I'm totally smitten now (my other
siamese (a female) is Bliki's relative), and have promised myself that
if I ever get a bigger place, I will try to breed Siamese cats.
