Here
are two photos of the most wonderful cat east of the Mississippi. I
took the liberty of sending you two photos because it is clear to me (as
I hope it will be to you) that a single photo, no matter the quality of
the camera or the skill of the photographer, would do justice to this
fabulous feline.
This is "Pepper". He is eleven years old and is a cat who has come to
the United States all the way from Indonesia. My wife and I lived in
Indonesia for twelve years, from 1987 to 1999, and Pepper was born in
our house there. He meows in two languages, both Indonesian and English
(the US version). His diet has consisted of fish, rice, mixtures of the
same (warmed up to just the right temperature to please his
"Pepperness").
Pepper's only adjustment problem, following his move from Indonesia to
North Carolina (where we currently live) has been his refusal to accept
the fact that there is an occasional bit of cold weather in the US.
Pepper, you see, from kittenhood never knew anything but balmy,
temperate tropical days and nights. Temperatures below 50 degrees
Fahrenheit upset him enormously, and he shares his discontent with my
wife and I. He has, during winter time, been known to knock pictures
askew and to look out the window asking (in Indonesian cat language),
"Where have you put my warm, sunny weather ???)"
The photos I am sending you show Pepper standing next to an Indonesian
cat carving which is not nearly as regal as Pepper. It is located at the
top of a set of bookshelves where Pepper can survey the entire house to
make sure that his humans (my wife and daughter and myself) and his
canines (one puppy) and his other cats (two cats) are all in their
proper places at the proper times.
