Maya
was a stray kitten that showed up at my door when I lived in West
Virginia in 1994. She was in poor health so I took her in with the
intention of finding her a home over the weekend. The interesting thing
about this is that, although I'm an animal lover, I really had never
liked cats and I was very allergic to them. But a miracle
happened. Over the course of that weekend, my allergies disappeared!
Even cats that had previously made me miserable no longer bothered me!
She's truly special and came into my life just when I needed a friend.
So, I fed her and nursed her back to health after paying lots of vet
bills (which is hard for a poor grad student to do), in order to rid her
of the infestations of ear mites, fleas and worms. I even had to buy a
book on cat care since I didn't know anything about them. Maya, as you
can see, is a beautiful, almost completely black cat. She must have some
Siamese in her because she is very verbal and we have conversations
together all the time. She is very affectionate and will often run to
your lap as soon as you sit down. She knows her name and will come when
I call her. She loves to play with twist-ties but her favorite toy is a
giant catnip filled "mouse" made by "Cats with Attitude" -- that describes
her perfectly! I love her dearly and wouldn't trade her for the world!
The small picture was taken after she began to recover from
malnourishment & the infestations. The larger picture shows her playing
"kitty in a box."
