Frankie
(so named for his blue eyes like Frank Sinatra) showed up in our
back yard over a year and a half ago. Because of Frankie's standoffish
behavior, my husband and I assumed he was a feral. We started feeding
him daily. As that winter drew near, Frankie still would not let us get
close. We very much wanted him to join our other indoor kitties that he
often conversed with through open windows. So we compromised and
provided a heated house and water dish to help him through the cold
snowy months.
This past summer he brought us a present of a darling little calico
kitty. Of course we took her in, and we are sure he is the father.
Despite all our attempts to gain his trust, he remained aloof and lived
in our back yard by himself until this past December. It seemed we might
have to relocate in the very near future, and I set about finding a
suitable place for Frankie as I was unwilling to just abandon him and no
one else in the neighborhood was interested in taking over his minimal
care. I was directed to a wonderful lady who is the president of the
Independent Cat Society, a local no-kill shelter. Sue said she would be
willing to help me trap him, get him neutered and vet checked, and let
him live on their property with the other ferals they oversee. As we
worked on trapping the wary Frankie during Christmas, he got very sick.
We nursed him as best we could and finally captured him.
As he was put through the vet and relocation paces over the next few
days, we found out he wasn't really feral, just a very scared little
boy. He doesn't have a bit of meanness in him, no scratching, no biting.
He was in the last days of an upper respiratory infection, but otherwise
got a clean bill of health. Surprised at how tame he was, we promptly
brought him home and have been working on his socialization ever since.
He has turned out to be a very good boy and remembers his little calico
girl, Cally. He is still a bit skittery, but plays like a kitten and is
adapting well to the comforts of our multi-cat household. He especially
likes it when we turn on the electric blanket at night and can usually
be found snoozing on the bed with several of the other heat-loving
kitties. We are quite proud of the progress he has made and I can't
thank Sue enough for helping us add Frankie to our family. In case you
are wondering, his pretty blue nails are Soft Paws.
