This
is our cat Minnie Sue. We rescued her from the pound eight years
ago after our previous cat had died. She didn't get along with other
animals, but she adored people. She liked my friend in particular. My
friend would ask her how she was, and she would 'talk' to her in
response. Her routine and pleasures were nice and simple. In the
morning she would play with our shoelaces while we put our shoes on. At
night, she always slept in my bed. Even when I was in the hospital
once, she kept my bed full for me. She loved food. One time she
snatched my donut right from under me and dragged it across the room. I
only got one bite! She really got overwhelmed when we ate Thanksgiving
Dinner. We always gave her some turkey, though. She just adored sitting
in the window, enjoying the country view in the springtime, listening
to the birds and feelings the breeze. She got so excited when we opened
the windows for the first time after winter was over. And she just
loved bathing in the sun that came through the window. She got sad when
the sun didn't shine on cloudy days. About two years ago after I had a
surgery, I got a helium balloon. She grabbed the string and tried to
pull it down. When it went back up she tried even harder. The went on
until the balloon was just inches from the floor. I guess we know who
won that fight!
Over the course of a month, she started getting sick. We knew she would
pass soon, so we gave her all the people food she loved but could never
have. One day, she seemed very uncomfortable and disoriented. That was
to be her last earthly day with us, so we cherished every last moment.
She died on April 17th, 2002, at 10:50 a.m. She was so exhausted that
she would have died minutes later even if we didn't put her to sleep.
I had my hands and head against her until the end. We decided to put
her ashes in the bay. It's a peaceful spot next to a park my
grandmother played at when she was little. I, my mom, and the friend I
mentioned were there. I said a few short readings to remember her by.
It was a beautiful day and the sun was glowing on the water. I went
into the water and put the ashes right where the sun glowed, just like
she liked. We recently got a new kitten, and we have been able to move
on with our lives now and love again. But surely, Minnie was one of a
kind, and nobody could ever take her place. Here's to you, Min! This
is your own special day!
