Last
summer, we found a cat while taking a walk. It was during a heat
wave and the obviously scared, lost and overheated indoor cat followed
us home and needed safety (and water). We took care of him and put signs
up in our neighborhood. We did not want a cat and did not consider
keeping the one we found. After a few days (maybe a few minutes) he
started to grow on us and we started hoping we would not get a call!
His owners called after one month and we were devastated since we
already considered him ours. The woman explained that it was her
daughter who owned the cat and we knew it was the right thing to give
him back. At the dreaded hand-him-over meeting, we were ecstatic when
the family offered to give us a new kitten (who shared the same mom as
the one we found) to thank us! The little girl even cat-sat our kitten
when we went away!!!
Heidi is very special. We named her Heidi because she hid inside our
couch framework when we first brought her home. Now she is much less shy
and barely ever scared. We love it when she sleeps in our lap or on our
chest and nuzzles us with her chin. She shows us she is happy by purring
(sounds like a motorcycle) and she makes cute squeak sounds more than
she meows. We often wake up with her next to us in bed, sometimes with
her head on the pillow and her body in the same direction as us! She
stares out of our window and watches the ducks, geese and birds at the
pond. She figured out how to make bird calls (with squeaks and
clicks) that sound authentic. She loves chasing sun reflections and
shadows and waits until we walk down the hall so she can chase our
shadow.
Heidi knows she is the "boss" and has a very strong will. Still, she
has her dependent side. She knows when we are about to leave the house.
She runs to the door and sits in front of it to block us from leaving.
When we return, she is usually at the door to greet us by rolling over
on her back. She brings us endless enjoyment and is a dear part of our life.
