Winston
was given to us when he was 1 1/2 years old by someone who was
highly allergic to him. I accepted him because I wanted a buddy for my
dog Max who had lost his best friend Rocky (our other dog) earlier in
the year. I can't say that they became best buddies in terms of playing
and cuddling against each other, because they don't do that at all, not
that Max wouldn't want to. But they certainly live together well and
respect each other. Once in a while we do catch Winston rubbing up
against Max. It took Winston and Max a few weeks to get used to each
other. Now they can eat their meals side by side without a problem. They
both greet us when we come home.
Winston turned out to be quite a character. He is very independent, not
a cuddly cat at all, no laps for him. But he is always in the same room
with us only a few feet away, and his morning ritual of rubbing around
everybody's legs is very endearing. He likes getting his ears rubbed,
for a minute, and will nibble your fingers when he's had enough. In the
morning he will also run after and catch our feet to make us go feed
him. On the block, he is the toughest cat around, and will not back off
from anyone to protect his territory. Through the chain link fence, he
likes to torment and punch Cujo, the young German Shepherd mix who lives
behind our house. He is also quite a good hunter and has caught
squirrels and chipmunks (something I don't particularly like, but I
respect his natural instincts). Winston loves the outdoors so much,
there is no way I could keep him in the house full-time, he would be
miserable. He will go to many lengths to make us open the door. He is
good company when I am out working in the garden. When he's in the
house, he likes to watch my two aquariums, gets exercise by running up
and down the hall after a ball, real or imaginary, and sleeps.
I am very glad we adopted Winston, and he adopted us; he is very
important to all our family and we wouldn't be without him.
