Bongo...
he's the cat that will change the minds of a "I'm not a cat
person" person. Bongo is the most gentle, inquisitive, loving and
affectionate cat that I've ever known. And to think, he's mine!!! I'm so
lucky! But that wasn't always the case... in fact, Bongo was almost not
my cat. When I was in graduate school in 1996, I was heading to my car
in the parking lot. It was late July and nine kinds of hot outside! A
small pickup truck was parked under a tree and as I walked past, I
noticed two tiny grey and white kittens - sluggish from the heat. A
woman was standing there so I walked over to pet the kittens. She went
on to explain that she was going to be evicted from her apartment
because of the kittens and hoped to find them a good home with a college
professor. Well, that was enough for me!! I scooped them up and home
they went! Bongo and his sister were nearly dead from the heat, they
were so tiny! I already had a cat, so I set about to find the kittens a
home. A couple of friends of mine that lived nearby took Bongo, and a
friend of theirs took Bongo's sister. During the next month, they were
traveling quite a bit, so I was pet-sitting Bongo. Well, it didn't take
much for me (and my other kitty at the time, Kit E. Kat) to become
attached to Bongo (I mean, really, who couldn't be??), so when my
friends returned to town, I announced that I had officially adopted
him!!! Bongo's the greatest. I know that all pet owners think
their cats are great, but Bongo is so special. There's not another cat
like him, I'm sure of it! Bongo's favorite hobbies are trying to open
the front door, playing chase with his younger brother, Barnum, playing
mouse, napping and following me around to see if I need "help." Bongo's
funniest habit is his penchant for drinking water only from his mug of
fresh water that sits on the edge of the bathtub. Every time I head into
the bathroom, there's Bongo ready and waiting at his cup. He's managed
to teach this trick to his older sister, Kit E. Kat, and younger
brother, Barnum. Bongo gets my day off to a good start by laying on my
stomach every morning to say hello. And when I return home each evening
from work, he's right there at the door to greet me...Bongo is loyal and
loving and I am the luckiest person in the world to have been chosen by
him as his owner!
