Precious
was taken in when her previous owner perceived a conflict
between the cat and their two-year-old human. Precious is quite cuddly
and highly photogenic. These days she spends a lot of time out of doors,
or playing with her best friend Spooky. She is one of eight cats that
make up our extended family.
I think most of my favorite thoughts about Precious come from her first
year. As a five-month-old she came to our house full of cats both
fearful and aggressive. Within a week she made became the best of
friends with our four-month-old Spook, who is now twice her size. I've
devoted a folder in my computer to pictures of the two of them
interacting. But as we all know, kittens aren't kittens for long and to
have as many as we do, one must love cats as well as cat babies.
Precious has become more self reliant during her second year. She still
finds time to wash Spook's head and occasionally wrestle with him but as
she tells him, "I'm grown up now." Typical woman. Males play forever;
females "grow up". Spook now has another baby to mentor anyway. Precious
is the most curious cat in the family and not easily frightened. Any box
or grocery sack is an immediate cause for exploration. Our rural home
and its surrounding "Great Woods" (to a cat's perspective) provide her
with a fine hunting preserve. She also likes hikes with her "daddy." We
live by a 275-mile-long river, where the cats and I often trek. Along
with her wild side she never fails to find time to chase the garden
hose. She especially likes the yellow one but will settle for a ride on
the green.
Just last Sunday my wife left a roast chicken on the counter to cool
before storing in the 'fridge. Precious found the chicken and was
interrupted by Debbie's loud and frantic voice. Precious stopped eating
long enough to raise her head and ask with inquisitive eyes, "what are
you going on about?" Debbie laughed, placed Precious on the kitchen
floor and hacked out the piece the cat had been feasting upon. Precious
received that piece to finish on a plate.
Precious is in some ways like a beautiful young woman. She's full of
grace and light as angel food cake. By the same token, I sometimes
wonder about her depth. From my perspective, it's not possible to take a
bad picture of this wonderful cat. She is my favorite cat model of all
times. And she works well with me, her "personal photographer."
