We
were in the process of adopting a kitten, Basil, from the Los Angeles
Animal Rescue when a lady brought in a cardboard box. The contents of
the box, a gray-furred seven-year-old cat (named Bourbon) cowered,
frightened, in the corner, waiting to be checked in. We were told he
was one of several cats that belonged to an elderly relative of the
woman's. Something told us in our hearts to take this cat home with us,
so we did. For a whole week the elusive gray cat hid under the bed. By
the time he finally came out, we had started calling him Boo (Radley -
like in To Kill a Mockingbird) since we knew he was there but never saw
him. Since then, the stately, but dorky looking Boo has really come out
of his shell. He is clumsy and uncoordinated, quite odd looking, very
gangly, long and floppy, longhaired and shorthaired, all silver-gray
with a white spot on his neck that makes it appear as if he is wearing
an ascot and facial fur that reminds one of muttonchops.
Boo is extremely needy, he simply must always be between my boyfriend
and I, at all times, even while we are sleeping. Being ever-helpful Boo
is always in your lap, lying on your computer keyboard (he has stepped
on delete several times - in fact he is trying to help me type this
right now) or trying to stick his head in your mouth. We were delighted
when he surprised us with his wonderful trick of jumping straight up
from the floor into your arms. Since Boo never wants to be put down we
purchased a sling (for broken arms) and now he can be carried around the
house wherever we go, hands free. He is completely content in the
sling, purring and rubbing his face, and cat snot, on your chin (he
especially likes goatees and beards because they are scratchy). His
favorite food is any kind of poultry (see photo) and he can hear a can
of chicken being opened before you even open it. Boo is truly the
strangest animal and often we doubt if he is a cat at all but rather an
alien in an ill-fitting kitty suit sent here to observe us.
