This
is Fatima aka Fattie or Tima. She was born in a Connecticut barn
until moving to NYC at the ripe old age of three months. But she didn't come
alone. She came with her sister Fee, a black Bombay/Siamese mix who is
two weeks older and had the same father. After several years of living
the Fat Cat life in a NY apartment they were joined by their new
step-sister Anna (now eleven), a black long-haired Burmese/Norwegian Forest
Cat spitfire. Other than the usual swiping and general harassment they
provided each other, all was well.
But recently we noticed that Fattie wasn't so fat any more. We first
thought she had put herself on a diet or was sneaking out to Jenny Craig
while we were at work. But after we learned her healthy sixteen-pound fighting
weight had dropped to eleven pounds we began to get concerned and took her to
the vet where we found out she had hyperthyroidism. Although this
condition is pretty unhealthy for cats it is also very treatable. So we
took her to Radiocat (radiocat.com) and got her radioactive iodine
treatment, which has a 98-99% success rate. She only had one injection
of it but had to stay in the hospital for a week while her radioactivity
dropped to a legal level. We missed her so much while she was away but
we're thrilled to have her back and she's already looking the picture of
health.
The strangest thing was when we brought Fatima home. We're not sure
whether it was because of the radioactivity or because her sisters
thought she had left home permanently, but Fee and Anna ran and hid
under the bed together as soon as Fatima got home. They continued acting
weird toward her for a few days after but are now just as much
affectionate and aggressive to her as always. Happy Ending!
