We
got Mitch in January of 2000, when he was twelve weeks old. He's named
after the restaurant, Mitch's Place, in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where my
husband and I met for the first time. We chose a Tonkinese because of
their reputation for being both affectionate and playful - sometimes
called the "Golden Retriever" of cats. True to the breed, Mitch splits
his time between being cuddly and spunky. He loves to curl up on our
laps or sleep on our chests when we're on the couch. He greets us by
running to the door, purring, and giving us affectionate little
head-butts. At night, he loves to sleep in bed with us, and paws at the
covers until we lift them up so he can crawl underneath.
When he's feeling playful, Mitch's favorite toy is a thick red ribbon that
he drags around with him. He scavenged it from a gift-wrapped box that
was mailed to our house. He'll bring it to us, drop it at our feet, and
stare at us until we play with him. Sometimes if we aren't paying
attention, he'll meow to remind us that it's play time. Whenever he's
done playing with any of his toys, he drags them into the kitchen and
puts them into his food bowl. We're not exactly sure why, but it sure
is cute! His other favorite game is "hunting." One of us will hide
around a corner and he'll come flying around and pounce on us or bat our
faces with his paw. Then, he runs back to his "starting position" to do
it all over again.
For a special treat, we'll let Mitch lick and bite the remaining fruit
around the core after we eat an apple. (That's what he's doing in the
small picture!) When he sees us eating one, he won't leave us alone
until we offer him some. He bites it with his front teeth just like a
person, and makes the funniest faces while doing it. But, what excites
Mitch the most is when we bring food home from Boston Market. The smell
of the chicken puts him into a frenzy. He'll beg on his hind legs like
a dog, and once, he took a flying leap onto my husband's plate and
landed right in his macaroni and cheese.
Besides little antics like that, he is perfectly behaved - never has had
an accident, never chews or scratches anything. The only problem we've
had is that poor Mitch has asthma that requires daily medication. We
are so sad to have to force him to take pills every day, but we make
sure we give him lots of extra love to make up for it... and usually a
couple treats, too!
