I
have known Elgee ever since he emerged from under a forsythia bush. He
marched right up to me and this beautiful, gray kitten demanded to be
petted. I had never really had a cat before and anything which wanted
love so much touched my heart. On the way home that night I decided to
purchase some cat food and see if the kitten was still there. He was and
so were eight other cats that suddenly appeared at the sight of food on
a real plate! This was the beginning of my experience as a caretaker for
a feral cat colony.
That was almost three years ago and today Elgee is the alpha cat of the
colony and it now consists of twelve cats. All cats have been spayed or
neutered with the help of some wonderful people who believe that TNR is
the best way to go. Elgee is more like a dog than a cat. He greets me
each morning for breakfast and is the first to say, "Hello" upon my
return home in the evening. He loves to pose for photos, as you can see
from this stately posed picture. He also will raise his paw and tug at
my arm if he needs a little more TLC. One of our rituals is an evening
walk after dinner when all of the colony joins us for a romp around the
area. Elgee is one of the most loving and gentle cats that I have ever
known and I will be forever grateful to him for introducing me to the
wonderful world of cats.
