We
adopted Achilles from the local Humane Society when we moved to
Toronto in the winter of 1997. We named him Achilles because his ID
card at the Humane Society noted that he was found in the Greektown area
of the city and that he had a foot injury. We thought he would be a
wonderful companion for Chloe, our other cat which we had brought back
with us from Taiwan. From the first day he joined our family, Achilles
established that he was the alpha male in our little clan! He is
super-duper friendly and loves to play with all the children on our
street.
In the summer, he was the quintessential "party animal," staying out all
night, roaming the neighborhood and coming home only as we are leaving
for work in the morning! He was also the crazy bandit, stealing dish
rags, tea towels, gardening gloves and even a child's baseball cap once.
He would drag them home and pertly sit on our front porch with his
"gift" in front of him, meowing till we would come out and acknowledge
his hard work!
Unfortunately, a year later, we found out he is FIV positive, and since
then, he has been an indoor cat. He does not sit well at home and have
been vocal about his displeasure with the situation. Now he is the lone
cat in our household as his companion Chloe passed away last year.
Achilles is very good at lounging about these days, whether it's in the
back yard (under our watchful eyes), on the coffee table, in the middle
of the kitchen floor or just about anywhere! He is a wonderful
character and he brightens our days!
