Angel's
feline mom was "The Cat Who Came To Lunch" at the company where
I work. In 1997, a short-haired "tortie" wandered into the parking lot
- dirty, lost and starving. Someone fed her leftover Cincinnati chili,
and she soon staked out a sheltered area behind the building. A few
weeks later, in a donated "Cat-Tel", she gave birth to three kittens.
When the kittens were old enough, we passed the hat around the office to
cover checkups for all four. Each of them won a heart and found a real
home. I instantly loved the little gray "dustball" who ran all over her
two butter-yellow brothers!
Angel was meant to be an indoors-only cat, but in her first spring she
discovered the back yard. After swearing to confine her to the house, I
gave in to her pitiful cries to join me in the garden. She likes to
help me, especially when I prune the catnip!
Though her purr is nearly inaudible, Angel "chirps" and "talks" quite
loudly. Each day, she waits at the front door for my return. Then she
leads me through the house to the bedroom, where I pet her for several
minutes before she allows me to begin chores. She still loves to chase
her mousies and to wrestle with her stuffed puppy-dog - which she
sometimes carries in her mouth like a kitten. She is fierce when
chasing other cats from the yard, but her favorite place of all is
curled up on my lap, looking like - my Angel.
