Gato
simply means "cat" in Portuguese, Spanish and Italian. Gato was
found by a co-worker, on my very first day at work she was asking people
around if anyone wanted to adopt a cat, and I had actually just decided
I wanted a cat. She called the shelter where she dropped him off and
told the people there to "hold" him for me, since they closed very early
and I would only be able to go there on the weekend. This was Monday, so
he had to stay almost a week there. We arrived at the shelter on Sunday,
and to our surprise and disappointment, they gave him to another person
the day before! We signed up to adopt a kitten we saw there but was not
ready to leave the mother yet, and she told us if by any reason the
person returned Gato (at the time called Lucky), she would call us. I
didn't count on that, why would anyone return him?
The next day, we got a call from the shelter and guess what? The guy who
took Gato on Saturday brought him back! He didn't know his roommate was
allergic to cats, so he had to return Gato! We couldn't believe it and
arranged to go there the same day, they asked someone to stay and let us
in after hours. We saw him and we were surprised, because my co-worker
had said he was 1 year old or less, and he actually was a fully grown
cat, but we decided to keep him anyway. We wanted to choose a cool geeky
name for him, since my dog's name is "Link" but we couldn't agree on a
name for a week, and my Brazilian friend who was at our house, kept
calling him "gato" since he had no name. By the end of the week we were
used to calling him Gato and agreed that would be his name. We are not
sure of his actual age, he is probably around four years old now.
He is very playful, friendly, comes up to strangers and brings his toy
to us every time he wants to play (which happens three to four times a day!). He
even plays with our four year old nephew and rubs against him, he is very
sweet. And last but not least, I think he likes having his picture
taken, since he stays still when I have the camera pointed at him ;-)
Gato has his own blog.
