Lucy, the Cat of the Day
Name: Lucy
Age: Three years old
Gender: Female
Kind: Domestic shorthair
Home: Houston, Texas, USA

Lucy is a very sweet but shy girl. Lucy is special not just because of that, but also because she was a flood survivor. I adopted her after Houston had suffered through some horrendous flooding from Tropical Storm Allison. The streets by our house were running like rivers, and many people's homes were partially submerged and damaged. Storms make victims out of family pets too, when they get lost or trapped. Lucy, her mom and two other kittens, were spotted floating down the waters of a swollen bayou on a small raft of leaves and twigs. They were rescued by a local agency, but the mom ran away. The kittens were put up for adoption. I already had two cats, but when I went to the pet store and saw so many pets up for adoption there because of the flood, my heart went out to this skinny, sad gray kitten, and I took her home with me.

Lucy hid under the bed for a few days before venturing out, and she still likes to go sleep under there for safety. She is such a gentle soul. She squeaks for attention so I'll play with her and she pats me softly on the arm or face to get me to pet her when I lie on the bed. She's turned into a real beauty! It's hard to get her to pose for photographs, so I was extra-happy when I got this shot! She is a sweetheart.
