Whimsy
was given to my by a woman I met at the first animal hospital I
worked at. She was a Bengal breeder, and both being cat lovers, we
became fast friends. I had been smitten with Bengal cats ever since I
first came across one, and always dreamed of having one to be owned by!
(Because make no mistake, a Bengal owns you. You do not own a Bengal!)
Whimsy joined the pride as a scrawny ten-week-old and very quickly took
over the house. It's funny how it worked, actually. I was afraid my
adult cats would be mean to her, so I was very careful about
introductions. However, when the time came to let them all meet
face-to-face, it was Whimsy who foofed herself up to as big as she could
get and came charging out of her cat carrier, spitting and trying to
look fierce. It was hilarious. The other cats just looked at her as if
thinking, "What in the world is that!?"
She has to be the quirkiest cat I have ever had the pleasure of loving.
A few of her endearing qualities are that she talks non-stop (and will
go back and forth with me, exchanging words) and is a fanatic about
uncooked spaghetti. As soon as she hears me take a box of spaghetti out
of the cupboard, she is at my feet, hysterically meowing and circling,
standing on her two hind legs to try to reach me, until I give her a
piece. Then she runs off, breaks it into little bits and comes back for
another one. It's totally bizarre. She also loves nothing more than to
lounge in the freshly dried laundry when it's still warm. And somehow
she always knows as soon as it is there. I might not see her all day,
but she's in that basket within five minutes of my bringing it up from the
laundry room. It's like she has a built in warm laundry sensor! She
also used to spend her nights as a kitten ferociously stalking my dirty
socks and leaving them on my bed while I slept. I can only guess this
was the indoor whacky Bengal version of the way outdoor cats leave their
people "presents," such as birds or moles. Whatever the reason, I am
sure her heart was in the right place!
I often joke that Whimsy is "not wired right," but that is truly part of
her charm. I wouldn't have her any other way!
