I
always thought I was a dog person. I grew up with both cats and dogs.
I loved both, but the dogs always seemed to mean more to me. That all
changed on January 14th of 2003. A friend's dog was missing, so we went
to the local pound to see if the missing pooch was there. He wasn't, but
as an afterthought, my friend and I went in to see the kitties.
There were eight cats, most of them very loving and vocal as soon as we
walked through the door. The very last cage had a little note attached
to it that read: LAST DAY. I looked in the cage and there in the
corner, scrunched up and terrified was my Reo. The look in his big blue
eyes just broke my heart.
I didn't think, I opened the cage and reached in. One of the workers
tired to warn me. She told me to be careful because he was very mean and
wouldn't let anyone touch him. Much to her surprise, Reo jumped in my
arms and wrapped his body around my neck. It was love at first sight. I
hadn't planned on bringing a cat home, as I was still living with my
parents, and they were very much against the idea of new animals, but I
just couldn't leave him there. He was due to be put down that night.
So I paid the fee and took Reo to a park. When I took him out of the
box the shelter workers had put him in, he curled up in my lap and
started purring. When I asked him what he wanted to be called, he
obligingly answered "Reee-OW", which I shortened to Reo.
At first having Reo in my home was a bit hard. My parents didn't want
him there and he was terrified of everything. The shelter workers had
informed me that he'd come from an abusive home. We had two cats and a
dog already. Reo got along great with our older male cat, Cuddles,
though he took a lot longer to warm up to everyone else, including our
enthusiastic Australian Shepherd, who believed it was her job to herd,
nurture and basically annoy Reo.
It is coming up on Reo's Two Year Adoption Anniversary. All I can say
is, I've never had a cat that I've loved this much. He is warm and
loving towards me. He's even warmed up to my family. He helps me sleep
at night by cuddling up near my head, and every morning he helps me get
up with a friendly paw to the nose. I couldn't have asked for a more
loyal friend. He seems a lot like a dog to me, but he treats everyone
else in a purely cat like of manner: When I want your attention, I'll
demand it. I have so many special memories with him already that I know
the years to come will be full of joy.
