A
couple of months ago, I did a very tiny bit of modeling for a
professional photographer, and when he sent me the prints, I discovered
that he was so taken with my cat, Professor Plum, that he took a dozen
or so great kitty shots, too - this is one of my favorites.
Professor Plum is a four-year-old boy - I think he's what's called a
mackerel tabby. He lives in Manhattan with me and enjoys sitting in my
window, watching the alleyway where the workers at the Chinese
restaurant in the next building chat. Recently, he has begun taking
brief forays out of the apartment and into the hallway. He has nearly
made it to the stairwell.
And what is so special about my cat? It's not just that the vet swears
he's "just big-boned" but calls him Professor Plump anyway. Nor is it
merely that his paws look like little hands, but actually have a 6th
claw growing from between his 'thumb' and 'first finger.' It's not even
just that he's an unbelievably sweet and friendly cat who has never met
a person or can of tuna that he didn't just love. What makes him so
special is the whole big, fuzzy, fishy-breathed package, perched on top
of you at six in the morning, kneading you with his twelve front claws, curled
up on the stove top passive-aggressively reminding you that you never
cook, stretched out on his back, with his head on your pillow or one of
his paws thrown over you. He is kitty, mom and pillow-hogging boyfriend
all in one!
