My
cat, Pushkin, is a Russian Blue, and is now six and a half years old.
I got him after my Somali, who I had raised from birth, died after 16
years of being my best friend. For years he was the only man in my
life, and is still the one I count on to be unconditionally loving. I
decided to get a different breed of cat, to prevent projecting the
expectations of behavior associated with Somalis onto my new house mate.
Russian Blues for sure have strong personalities that are very different
from Somalis. Somalis are quiet and playful. Pushkin is very vocal but
not very playful. He has taken on the job of protecting the household
from intruders. He rise early each day to greet the mail man by pushing
his paws through the mail slot each time a new piece of mail comes
through. I have seen many dogs do this but never a cat.
He has also used up one of his nine lives and by getting out last winter
during the coldest weather our city, Louisville, KY had suffered in over
two decades. I now think of him as my miracle cat since he was lost in
icy, sub zero weather for ten days. Somehow after the weather broke and
the ice melted, he found his way home.
I am home bound due to physical problems (MS), so he truly rules my
heart and house. Plus he is lovely to watch, with his big green eyes
and platinum-tipped hair. I might be a bit partial but I think he is
worth of being honored.
