I
found Napali on a remote beach in Hawaii. He was mewing under a bush
when I saw him for the first time. I fed him a little yogurt, he began
purring, and I knew I'd try to bring him home to San Francisco. Everyone
at the Kapaa Animal Clinic, where I had him tested and vaccinated, was
super and I found out there that feral cats are all over Hawaii. I also
met a woman at the clinic who raises money to spay and feed feral
Hawaiian cats. On the way home, my airline required that I put Napali in
an animal carrier that could fit under the seat, but the carrier sat on
my lap so I could pet him. He wanted to look at everything and wasn't
scared by all the moving around. People would come over and say "What a
well-behaved cat! He looks just like (fill in their cat's name here)!"
The number of cat lovers was amazing.
He's put on weight since I found him, and now looks like a little bunny.
We have two other older cats and Napali is so active he drives them a
little nuts, pouncing on them and chasing them down the hall. But they
all nestle together and groom one another too. Napali has a wildness I
love. He notices everything that moves, plays with the shade pulls and
hides when he hears unfamiliar voices. What he likes best is to curl up
on my shoulder, press his nose against mine, and purr loudly. I wonder
if he remembers the Napali Coast of Kauai, Hawaii where he was born.
