I
adopted Pixy from a shelter located not too far from my home. She had
been living there for about six months. At first, she was very
skittish, but did show affection from time to time on her terms. I
learned later that she had been a show cat. Her previous owner was
enraged when she lost a show. To punish her, the owner cut off one of
her feet. The authorities arrested the owner and took Pixy to the
shelter.
I have had Pixy for a year and she is quite lovable. Often, I will wake
in the mornings to find that she is content to sleep on my back, with
her chin and nose close to my face. She still is very nervous when I
try to hold her, always pressing her legs against my chest to get away.
But as soon as I let her down, she spins around, staring up at me and
crying for me to pet her. She tends to follow me all over the house,
even going so far to open doors when I close them.
She loves to play with any object I throw her way. Her favorite toy is
a plastic bottle cap that I roll around on the floor. She does her best
to chase it down, kicking her stubby leg high in the air. She wraps her
arms around string and allows me to drag her short distances while she
tries to rip it with her teeth. When she spies a fly or other flying
bug, she cackles, her whiskers twitch, and her eyes dart as she tries to
follow the bug's flight.
Pixy is very dear to my heart, and brings much joy to my life.
