Smudge, the Cat of the Day
Name: Smudge
Age: Ten years old
Gender: Male
Kind: Cat
Home: Somerville, Massachusetts, USA

My name is Smudge, and I'm a Mainely Coon - all the attributes and no pedigree! As for why I'm special - well, just look! I'm gorgeous. My fur is such a shimmering hematite-silver color that humans sometimes call me "blue" because their language just doesn't have a pretty enough word for fur like mine! I must be brushed and combed thoroughly at least once a day - any less than that would be an affront to the Universe, a woeful lack of appreciation of Nature's beauty. It's a rewarding activity - my human says she's almost combed enough fluff off of me to knit a medium-sized kitten.

I haven't always been this beautiful, though. I used to be so itchy that I would scratch big patches of fur off of my skin, until a very smart veterinarian figured out that I wasn't getting enough fish oil! So now my human knows to squirt a "treat" capsule over my food every day... or just when I'm being extra cute...

Cute, that's something I'm very good at. Whether I'm rolling on my back waving my paws in the air, speaking Morse code by thumping my tail on the floor or a box, or licking my human's toes (it takes her so long to wake up in the morning!) I'm the King of Cute. And you should hear me purr! My human says I talk with an accent because I like to purr and meow at the same time. She tries to pronounce "Squikka-prrrr" and "Brrrrrip" and "Mrrreowow" the way I do, but she just sounds silly.

She's OK, my human, except that she doesn't like to play most cat games. She hasn't got luxurious fluffy fur to keep my teeth and toenails from bothering her, so she'll only play with me until I get frisky. But she's always good for a game of tug-of-war or mouse hockey, and as a groomer she's first-rate. And she knows I'm meant to be a star - so here I am!
