We
found Peggy in the local humane society - we had gone looking for a
girl to complete our family (two male cats). Even though seven months
old, she was very tiny, appearing more like three to four months. She
was beautiful but quiet.
We noticed that the card attached to her cage - the
ones that usually say things like "loves to be petted", "very
affectionate" - said "doesn't seem to like her neighbors". Seemed a odd
'marketing' statement.
Nonetheless, we decided she was for us. As the
attendant began to get the paperwork together, she said that she had to
warn us that Peggy had already been adopted out and returned. When we
inquired about the reason for returning her, she said the computer only
indicated "not friendly". Well, my husband and I have had cats for 15
years together and we figured that the previous owners simply were not
"cat people". So, we brought Peggy home and while she seemed comfortable
roaming about the house, she hissed whenever we or our two other cats
approached her. After 48 hours of this, we began to worry that "not
friendly" was an understatement and my husband suggested that we might
have to take her back to the Humane Society! At that point, I said, "we
can't - she's an orphan and she knows it!" By the next day, the ice had
broken and Peggy has become one of the friendliest and most affectionate
cats I've ever known. Every visitor to our home gets "Peggy-time" and
the children in the neighborhood all know Peggy as we suspect she visits
their homes too! I guess she just needed to feel she could trust us.
