This
is Magic (black Magic, of course). Magic was a completely feral cat
in our neighborhood. We used to see him, at a distance, roaming around,
until one February he was on our front porch and we got a good look at
how skinny he was - his ribs were showing. So we put some food out in a
dish, under a bush by the front walkway. It disappeared - but no sign of
the cat. We put more out - it disappeared, but again, we never saw him
eat it. Next day, we put more food out - it disappeared.
Over the course of months, first we got to see him eat the food; then we
moved it to the bottom step, then the next one, then up onto the porch,
then he would let us watch him and talk to him through the door. Then he
would let us go out on the porch (at a distance) while he ate, then he
would talk back to us and rub up and down the railing, and so forth.....
And by August he was waiting on the porch furniture when we got home,
howling for his dinner and demanding attention, and trying to make friends
with our house-cats through the screens (no aggression showing at all -
amazing for a feral cat!). So finally we got him in a carrier, took him
to the vet's, got him checked out and tested and vaccinated and neutered
and all, and took him in. The vet estimated he'd been completely wild on
the streets for at least three to four years (which matched with our seeing him
around outside).
Magic has become the most loving, affectionate cat I've almost ever
seen. He is still a strong, powerful cat, a miniature black panther,
even after three years in the house with our pride, but he's a totally
warm, friendly, affectionate, loving cat. He gets along (mostly) with
all the other cats, and he is a complete joy to come home to, we always
get a greeting trill and a request for some attention as soon as we walk
in- he'd be an exceptionally friendly and affectionate cat anyway, but
as a former feral, he's truly amazing!
