Calliope
is the most intelligent kitty I've ever owned. Her curiosity is
insatiable and must investigate every new thing or person that comes into
the house. When she was a wee kitten, she immediately figured out how to
get out of the house (through a cupboard, then behind the oven and on to a
small opening just below the house). I found her outside and brought her
back in twice. Then I waited outside to see where she was getting through.
Not to be outdone, when she peeped through the teensy crack and saw me she
ducked right back out of sight. She climbed every tree explored every nook
and cranny and when her slower-witted brother Vivaldi followed her up an
oak tree and couldn't get down and sat there crying, she ambled back up
and showed him step-by-step how to negotiate his way down. Vivaldi went on
to cat heaven years ago, but Calliope continues. She has been found gazing
at the tv with the remote control at her paws, if she sees an animal on
the tv screen she runs behind the telly to find it. She's turned on the
remote control of our sound system and lies down to listen to music. She
turns on the computer from sleep. At night she crawls under to covers with
me to purr me to sleep.
When we moved she was initially terrified of the dishwasher. The next time
I turned it on, she sat and stared at it, unafraid. Then when I opened it
up, she wanted to climb inside to inspect it.
This is a recent photo, these days, every morning she climbs into our
old-fashioned claw foot bathtub to soak up morning light. So here she is,
in the tub for her "sunbath". Afterwards she cuddles with a washcloth for
fifteen minutes before her early morning nap.
