I
first saw Lily while browsing the local animal shelter web sites in
May. My first thought was, "Well, I can't adopt her, she looks just like
Chi!"
Chi, short for Capuccino, was my best buddy for seventeen years. She
had just passed away a few months earlier, and I thought it would be too
strange to adopt a cat who looked almost exactly like her. But then I
realized I might just have the perfect home for Lily. I have all that
experience with a "touchy tortie" and understand their need for a
peaceful atmosphere.
The shelter made me come back twice to meet her, and even then they told
me to "go home and think about it some more." I called them the day
after my second visit and asked, "When can I come pick her up?"
They warned me it might take weeks before she chose to come out from
hiding, and asked me to please not give up on her. Imagine my surprise
when, after just two days, she walked out to the middle of the
living room and did a "belly-up!"
Lily has a much different personality than Chi. She is not a cuddler and
she does not like to be picked up, but she's extremely playful. She's
developing a whole range of chirps and trills and loves to hang out with
my friends and family when they come to visit. She adores having her
neck and ears scratched, and purrs like crazy when you give her just
that little bit of attention. She races from one end of the apartment to
the other just for the heck of it. I call her my silly little bug.
I think she's an excellent example of why people should check with their
local shelters before they visit a pet shop, and why they should
consider an older pet. If I'd been set on adopting a kitten, I'd have
missed out on my wonderful Lily!
