Orion, the Cat of the Day
Name: Orion
Age: Nine years old
Gender: Male
Kind: Maine Coon mix
Home: Athens, Georgia, USA

Orion is a gentle giant; a real sweetheart who is sensitive and loving. He is also incredibly clever. Orion chirps and purrs and rubs his furry self all around your ankles as welcome-home greeting, he can show you exactly where the food container is, even if you move it, he plays mama to our other two cats and keeps their head and ears clean, if we foster a kitten or cat, he also takes care of it. His large, watchful eyes are very expressive and he uses them in conversations with you. As a kitten, he would play for hours, jump up on top of the refrigeration from the floor, explore the basement and come up covered in cobwebs and look completely innocent. Once he jumped out of a secondary-story window and then looked up at the me, without any injuries, as if to say "I told you I could do it." As he's gotten older he's learned to magically teleport to any room you are in and still be completely asleep. He is a fearless moth hunter and never tires when charged with getting any and all moths that may have flown into the house.

In addition be being super smart and beautiful, he is a wonderful buddy. When my pregnant cousin lived with me, he spent every night with her and after the baby was born, we would guard the baby carrier and would meow if you got too close. He still loves that four year old and puts up with quite a lot from him. Whenever I have been sick or injured, he won't leave my side--he offers comfort, companionship and compassion. He lays near the hurt area (i.e., broken foot, burns, etc.) and uses his magical paws to make me feel better. If I'm just ill or feeling down, he curls up by my head and keeps an eye on me and reassures me it will be okay.

He is full of love, but he's no softy. Once, he woke me up in the middle of the night crying and when I followed him downstairs, he showed me a giant black scorpion in the kitchen--he knew it shouldn't be there. One time there was an intruder in the backyard, coming onto the porch, and Orion ran upstairs to find me, hair-raised and upset to warn me. Luckily everything was fine in the end.

His favorite toy is a okra, no kidding! He loves whole okra - he rubs all over it, rolls around with it, chases it and chews on it.

What can I say? Orion is my heart, my best buddy, and my best friend. I love him!!!
