Kato
is a four year old mixed Siamese/Abyssinian with a little tabby in
him. He is a very special cat, because of his incredibly sweet,
endearing personality, and also because he is blind from birth - but one
would never know it. His Siamese genes led to a genetic defect that
caused him to lose the veins to both optic nerves at about three months of
age. We think he might see shadows, but the vet says there's "nothing
there" when she examines his retinas. Despite this, he catches moths
outside at a great rate in the summer; fetches toys that are thrown down
(or up) the stairs and brings them right back to one's feet; navigates
around the house without bumping into anything (except when he's
particularly excited at hunting a toy mouse); and also navigates
unerringly to one's lap or chest at every occasion. He also sticks his
nose into everything, particularly glasses of wine or scotch.
The picture was taken from the patio (last fall), where he loves to sit
and tilt his head to the sun. He's not allowed off the patio since he
obviously can't find his way home. His two escapes almost resulted in
tragedy. The last one, when he took refuge under a neighbors car,
thankfully only gave him a seriously bad headache when the car was
started. He has seven lives left, and we hope he'll live them all!
