This
is Woody, the International Playboy, a cat who's probably travelled
more than most people. He's followed me as I moved from Toronto to
Montreal to Shenzhen, China. He's also visited New York. I adopted him
from the Toronto Humane Society when he was just six months old. Since
then, I've grown to know and love his alternately affectionate and
disdainful personality.
Woody can be the sweetest boy, jumping on my bed in the morning to kiss
my face and purring thunderously as I scratch his head. However, when
he's had enough, he takes off without so much as a backward glance,
leaving me with a fistful of orange fur.
He loves to lounge, head resting on his paws as he lazily surveys the
room. A friend and I named him Luxury Cat or Playcat, because he's often
content to lie around, showing off how gorgeous he is. Call him - "Pss,
pss, pss!" and his sea-green eyes flick up, then disdainfully away - as
if he were saying, "I'm not coming unless you make it worth my while."
But Woody also has a playful - and reckless - side. He once escaped out
my 21st floor apartment window, tiptoed around the railing to the
neighbor's balcony and then yowled to be let in. He's ten years old now,
but catnip and a toy that looks like a long, furry tiger tail can still
make him wriggle with delight.
I love this little guy, and so do most who meet him!
