This
is Callie Elizabeth. Callie came into our lives very unexpectedly.
Our apartment already consisted of two adults, a dog, and two cats. One
sunny Saturday afternoon, I ran into Wal-Mart for something while my
roommate waited in the car (you know what parking is liking at Wal-Mart on
a Saturday afternoon). As I came out the front door, there were a couple
of teen-aged girls with several kittens they were giving away. Loving
cats the way I do, I could not resist holding one of the tiny little
creatures. Long story short, as my roommate later told me she thought to
herself driving up "we're getting a cat today." Now she's allergic to
cats, and I already had two, both of which were seventeen years old and probably
not at all interested in having a kitten in the house.
Lucy (the dog) was immediately in love with Callie, taking on the role of
surrogate mama. As cats can be, Callie's sisters weren't as welcoming.
Her sister, Megan, tolerates her - to a degree - but there's a lot of
hissing when Callie wants to play. Her other sister, Molly, was not in
good health when Callie joined the family. Molly was blind and had a lot
of trouble just getting around. It wasn't long though before Callie could
be found hanging on Molly on a regular basis. We lost Molly three months ago,
and though no one could ever take her place, Callie brings so much joy to
our home that my grieving has been eased. And though Callie and Molly only
shared life for five months, Callie has some of the same quirky behaviors
as her sister. She loves to sit on the side of the tub while someone
bathes or is in the shower - even draping her tail in a tub of water or
jumping in after the shower to let water drip on her head. She and Lucy
thunder through the house like a herd of buffalo chasing each other.
Callie is always right beside Lucy greeting anyone who comes to the door.
Callie loves everyone and everyone loves Callie. She is my
not-so-little-anymore blessing from God, and I don't know what I'd do
without my little Wal-Mart surprise in my life.
