Tommy
is a fantastic cat. From the moment he entered our lives he has
brought great love and joy. I was in the back yard; a big, long, furry,
black cat emerged from a drainage culvert, walked over to me, stood on
his hind feet and wrapped his front arms around my leg. Over the next
months he spent more time around the house. Now he is an indoor cat, a
wonderful member of the family.
Tommy is fifteen pounds, incredibly long, strong, and amazingly smart. He
chases balls and other toys all over. He likes me to sit on the floor,
and then will curl up (as much as a fifteen pound cat can) in my lap. I
suspect he likes this because when we first met we would sit that way in
the yard. He will sleep next to me, using me as a pillow, allowing me to
put my arm across him.
Not surprisingly, Tommy likes watching animals. We put seed outside the
floor level windows so squirrels, chipmunks and mourning doves will
provide live entertainment for Tommy and the other cats. Tommy is the
only one who watches cats on television, and YouTube provides great
entertainment for him.
Often we think of Tommy as a dog. The vet says he's probably a
Norwegian Forest Cat, because of his size and build. More than any other
cat we have known, he has a dog's personality. If he sees you leaving a
room, he will rise to go with you. If you roll a ball across the floor,
he will roll it back to you. He will sit and listen to you talk, and
clearly understands spoken words. Occasionally, he will use his
chirping, expressive voice to respond in English.
Tommy is the latest of a line of cats. He has sisters Acony Bell, Dancer
and Micah, and he had a dog sister he never met called Grace.
We are incredibly fortunate that Tommy came into our lives, and I know
he feels the same about us.
