Meet
a rather sleepy Archie, posing for a Valentine's card! He is the
brother of Gizzy and is Very Strange. All he longs for is to have his
butt firmly patted - preferably while you hang on to his tail with a
firm, steady pull. If we are sitting watching TV, he will go from one
'pink patter' (his definition of what humans are for) to another to be
patted until the hand is aching. Stop for a minute and he moves on to
the next one!
When I visited his Mum's litter to choose a new kitten, I had already
decided not to choose a black and white shorthair, as I had lost my
beloved William and did not want to see my new friend as a replacement:
but Archie had other ideas. I returned to visit Gizzy (still too young
to leave his Mum) and take a towel from my home for him to sleep on.
This was to be swapped with one he had been on, so my old boy
would learn his smell and vice versa. I sat on the
floor to play with the little fluffball and suddenly, there was The
Kitten I Definitely Did Not Want snuggled up to my leg. End of story.
When I collected Gizzy a few weeks later, I came home with two kittens
in the basket and now cannot imagine what it would be like not to have a
Pat Cat! As it happens, he is almost exactly like William - not only in
looks, but with the same little squeaky meow and, yes, William was a Pat
Cat too! Reincarnation? I don't believe in that... or at least I don't
think I do.
He shared in the decimation of my giant cheeseplant with his brother and
also managed to have adventures like getting locked into the local
Spiritualist Church that backs on to our garden, where he sat and wailed
at the window until I could locate someone to let him out the next day.
I wasn't too worried as I knew he was safe and I posted ice cubes and
crunchy cat food through the letterbox to keep him happy. Wrong! He
was not happy and continued to wail, coming home the next morning
extremely hoarse - perhaps that's where the squeaky voice came from.
I'm very glad he decided that he wanted to live with us - and I often
tell him so.
