Was The Cat that Stayed for the Storm.
It was mid-October 2005 and hurricane Wilma was bearing down on
southwest Florida. It was also less than a week since our Egyptian Mau
passed away. We were still in mourning when we received a call from the
Animal Welfare League asking if we would foster a cat until the threat
of the hurricane had passed. The shelter was in a flood plain and
needed to be evacuated as a precaution.
Reluctant, at first, since we had planned to evacuate ourselves; plus,
we'd already donated all of our Mau's supplies to the shelter. It was
just too soon... or so we thought.
As Wilma tracked further south, we put our evacuation plans on hold
decided to foster "just one". We had been to the shelter a few days
before to volunteer in the Kitty Cottage and it was then that I spotted
"Lewis." I remembered him from a previous visit. He was skinny and shy,
but he rubbed against my hand and purred. An "adult", he appeared to be
a very gentle cat, even though he was listed as a "stray. Reluctantly,
we took "Lewis" home ... but only for the storm. Neither of us was ready
for a full-time commitment so soon after the loss of our Mau.
Well, from the moment "Lewis" set foot in our condo, he made himself
right at home. He found both beds very comfortable for napping (thank
you), and really liked my recliner. All were spots that the Mau had
favored. "Lewis" had impeccable manners, too. He knew where the litter
box was; he readily found the feeding room; and was settling in just
fine.
He also sensed that I was sad. He made a point of warming my lap and
purring whenever I sat down to read or watch TV. They say cats are
psychic and we truly believe "Lewis" was because he turned out to be a
carbon copy of our Mau, both in personality and habits. He quickly
endeared himself to us, so much so, that we adopted him.
"Lewis" is now "Scooter" (after "Scooter" Libby, who was in the news
daily at the time). And lives in a lovely, waterfront condo in
Florida, and he is a very happy, healthy and handsome young man to
boot.
He is super friendly, great with children, and he greets everyone who
comes to the door with his tail up in the air. He also warms our bed
at night. I call him my "loverboy."
Our only regret is that we didn't name him "Macka", which means "cat" in
Croatian-Slovenian, since he is now a member of our mixed
Croatian-Slovenian household.
