In
February of 2004 my daughter visited Cleveland, Ohio's Animal
Protection League, just looking at the kitties. As she was leaving, a
lady came in with a box. She told the counter attendant that she wanted
to surrender a cat "because there's something wrong with it."
The APL worker took a half grown kitten out of the box and he
immediately fell over. His head shook and he had problems getting back
up onto his paws. The APL worker said that he was "unadoptable" and
would be immediately taken back and put to sleep.
So, my daughter begged the lady to give him to her instead. She
promised that I would not say no. That's how Ludicrous came to live
with us.
He has a condition called Cerebellar Hypoplasia, which is sometimes
caused by the mother contracting distemper during pregnancy. It causes
him to have problems with motor control. He requires no special
treatment, is in no pain, and has a normal life expectancy. He just
falls a lot, has problems walking, and lacks visual depth perception.
But he enjoys playing with our four older cats, and is not shy about
asking for some loving from us. We consider ourselves blessed to have
him and are inspired at how he does not allow his handicap to affect his
spirit. He falls, gets up, and goes scampering on.
