Shanti
is a shaded silver gray Maine Coon tom. I have never had a cat
as loving, people-friendly, laid back, and as intelligent as Lord Shanti
Shaggybuns. And there are more things that make my Lord Shanti special.
First, he will bring a small toy to me in his mouth and lay it at my
feet. This means he wants me to play toss and catch with him. Shanti
tears after the toy and nearly always catches it in his two front paws.
Secondly, if I'm not quick enough to answer the telephone, Shanti will
paw the receiver off the hook and meow into the mouthpiece. Thirdly,
Shanti is so clever that he knows which of my many kitchen cabinets
holds his food. When he wants his breakfast and supper, he will reach
this cabinet, standing on his hind legs, paw it open, rummage among the
cans, and pull his choice down to the counter. Finally, when I'm
relaxing and reading, and at bedtime, Lord Shanti snuggles next to me.
At 21 pounds, he's too big to sit on my narrow lap. He curls up in the
V created by my legs at night, using my calves as his pillow. And when
he wants his breakfast, he wakes me with nose-kisses and gentle pats on
my cheeks with his paws. I hope all this makes it clear why Lord Shanti
Shaggybuns is so special, and why he is my dearest friend!
