Kyrie, the Cat of the Day
Name: Kyrie
Age: Seven years old
Gender: Male
Kind: Blue Abyssinian
Home: Westchester, New York, USA

Kyrie [kir-ee-ay] was brought into our household, after the loss of a long-time Siamese family member. On the way home from the breeder, all of the pre-selected names were tried-out, but none of them seemed to fit him. The following morning, a song from the 80's was playing on the radio: "Kyrie Eleison." It seemed to fit him perfectly! This is a photo of Kyrie trying to become a "Calico Abyssinian."

Kyrie is an extremely energetic, high-strung, strange feline, with numerous idiosyncrasies, but a gentle spirit and a heart of gold. He feels responsible for EVERYthing and readily offers his superior leadership skills and dutiful sense of responsibility. Although quite trim, his life revolves around food and he has become the self-appointed maitre d'. He makes sure that there is always food in everyone's dish and that everyone is present and accounted for, before he feels entitled to take his first bite. Once we had a feline visitor in the house, while her master was traveling. She was kept crated and was fed in a separate location. Kyrie was beside himself, trying to figure out how to manage two "dining rooms."

When the feline matriarch of the family developed thyroid problems resulting in total blindness, Kyrie was there to assist her, too. Whenever she cried-out in fear or frustration because she had become disoriented, he was right there by her side, day or night, acting like a "seeing-eye dog." It was amazing to watch. He would stand by her side and push against her body with his, gently guiding her toward where she wanted to go. Sometimes, she was a little cranky or feeling too proud for help and would pull away from him, which often caused her to bump into something. He seemed to sense this. So, when she was in a cranky mood, he approached her from the opposite side. Predictably, she would pull away from him and go in the opposite (correct) direction.

His gentle nature is totally accepting and non-discriminatory, as he wouldn't harm a flea or the occasional non-paying mouse and snake tenants, either! He is agile enough to catch them, but plays with them, with the utmost gentleness, until they find an escape route and depart relatively unharmed. We wouldn't trade him in for anyone. He is a keeper. We just leave the mousing and snake patrols to one of the other cats. (His name translated means "Lord have mercy!") This is a photo of Kyrie on his favorite perch.
