Meet
our completely neurotic--yet absolutely, truly loveable--cat: Ariel
("Lion of God" makes an appropriate feline name). Ten years ago I
hinted to my then-boyfriend Kevin that I intended to have pets again one
day. As Kevin never had pets, I felt this critical subject needed to be
broached early in our relationship. His response mattered to me. I
grew up with pets galore--skinks, chameleons, dogs, rabbits, hamsters,
boa, tarantula, etc.--and yet couldn't have any pets in the room I was
renting just out of college. I missed having critters and knew I wanted
them in my life.
That Christmas Kevin completely surprised me with a little furball,
knowing full well that she had to live at his house (smart guy,
huh?). The joy of foot-wrestling in the middle of the night as well as
her amazing determination demonstrated by her ability to flatten and
slide under doors for the first few months taught me the extent of
Kevin's remarkable patience. Well, ten years, one wedding, three
additional cats, and one mouse later, my gorgeous Ariel continues to
grace us with her many quirks and insecurities. She certainly deserves
to be honored.
